Chris (Emile Hirsch) har oparbejdet en anselig gæld til sin pusher, som nu truer ham på livet. I desperation planlægger han at myrde sin mor for at hæve forsikringssummen og til jobbet hyrer han en korrupt politimand med tilnavnet ’Killer Joe’ (Matthew McConaughey). Problemet er, at Chris ikke har penge til det forskud, Joe forlanger og snart bliver alt for mange personer involveret i Chris’ svindelnummer. Killer Joe er instrueret af William Friedkin, kendt for sin instruktion af Eksorsisten og Oscar-belønnet for The French Connection.
