Jeanne d'Arcs Lidelse og Død er baseret på protokollerne fra den rettergang, som i 1431 førte til Jeanne d’Arcs domfældelse for kætteri og henrettelse på bålet. Den månedlange proces er i filmen trængt sammen til et langt kortere forløb. Jeanne står alene mod en hel skare af præster og munke, der med en byge af spørgsmål prøver at presse hende til at indrømme, at hendes visioner ikke er sendt af Gud; men selv under trussel om tortur står hun fast. Hun er for syg til, at dommerne tør pine hende, men ved at true hende med at blive brændt på bålet får de hende til at skrive under på, at hendes visioner var falske. Hun fortryder dog snart, og hun bliver brændt levende. På tilskuerne virker hendes død som et martyrium, og folkemængden rejser sig til oprør mod undertrykkerne.
