I et opdelt land på randen af krig er to små drenge, Amir og Hassan, på trods af deres forskelle de bedste venner. Efter at have boet 20 år i USA, vender Amir tilbage til et farefuldt Afghanistan styret af Taleban, for at konfrontere fortidens mørke hemmeligheder, der stadig plager ham.
