Teenageren Stanley Yelnats er forfulgt at uheld. Sinden hans oldefar lagde en forbandelse over familien, har han befundet sig på det forkerte sted på det forkerte tidspunkt. Så da han bliver uskyldigt dømt for tyveri, er alt som det plejer. Stanley idømmes 18 måneders straffearbejde og bliver sendt på en opdragelseslejr. Her tvinges drengene til, i bagende sol, at grave huller i en udtørret sø for at "Styrke karakteren". De overvåges af den benhårde Mr. Sir og den frygtede inspektør. Men Stanley og hans medfanger finder snart ud af, at ledelsen skjuler noget - så hvad leder de i virkeligheden efter??
