En morgen opdager en øjenlæge at han er blevet blind. Det samme er sket for en række andre personer i byen og de sættes i karantæne af myndighederne. Lægens kone kan stadig se, men foregiver at være blind for at kunne følge sin mand. Snart har epidemien ramt så mange, at samfundets orden bryder sammen og erstattes af lovløshed. Lægens kone forsøger at hjælpe en gruppe på syv personer på flugt fra det isolerede hospital.
