Henri Young bliver uskyldigt fængslet i Alcatraz. Han forsøger at stikke af flere gange uden held, og først efter tre år i isolation lukkes han ud. Kort efter myrder Young den mand, som sladrede om hans flugtforsøg, og Young anklages for mord. Den unge principfaste advokat James Stamphill bliver Youngs forsvarer, og mod alle odds anklager han hele det amerikanske fængselssystem for overlagt mord.
