Paul Sturges tager sin familie med på en tur til Mexico for at inspicere en olieplatform, som hans firma ejer. Da de kommer derud, finder han stedet nærmest forladt med kun nogle få skrækslagne arbejdere tilbage, som fortæller ham, at olieplatformen gentagne gange er blevet angrebet af en monstrøs haj, der er en del af en mexicansk legende. Da olieplatformen synker i vandet, og hajen jager dem, må han finde en måde at få sin familie i sikkerhed og holde sig i live.
