Under udgravningen af en klosterruin finder arkæologerne Kate og Marek et nødråb dateret 1357 fra deres professor Johnston (Billy Connolly), der leder udgravningen. Da Kate og Marek kræver en forklaring af firmaet ITC, der betaler for udgravningerne, bliver de præsenteret for en tidsmaskine. Professorens søn Chris (Paul Walker), Kate, Marek og 4 andre beslutter sig for at rejse tilbage til år 1357 for at redde professoren tilbage til nutiden.
