Et afslappende weekendkrydstogt ombord på en luksusyacht udvikler sig til et frygteligt mareridt for seks ex-high school venner, da ingen af dem tænker på at hænge en stige ud over rælingen, inden de hopper i Den Mexicanske Golfs indbydende, azurblå vand. I takt med at deres situation begynder at bundfælde sig, breder panikken sig. Deres desperate, forgæves forsøg på at komme ombord på båden, udmatter dem alle. For en af pigerne, Amy, er situationen helt uudholdelig. Hun kæmper for at holde sig oven vande, hun kæmper mod sin vandskræk og hun tortureres ved tanken om hendes nyfødte datter Sara, der stadigvæk er ombord på båden.
