Golfkrigen, 1991. Jack Starks overlever et pistolskud i hovedet, men får hukommelsestab. Og da han efter hjemkomsten til Vermont bliver beskyldt for mord, er der intet, han kan gøre… Han bliver indlagt på en lukket afdeling og udsat for en ny, kontroversiel behandlingsform. Stærkt påvirket af hallucinogene stoffer rejser han ud i fremtiden, hvor han møder Jackie. Hun gemmer på nøglen til den mørke fortid, Jack ikke kan huske… Og da hun opdager, at Jack er fire døgn fra sin dødsdag, må de sammen prøve at undgå det uundgåelige…
