I sit arbejde med at kortlægge den sibiriske ødemark møder kaptajn Arseniev Dersu Uzala. Den kinesiske jæger kan tyde alle naturens tegn og bliver kaptajnens vejviser. Frost, udmattelse og sult er hverdag for vejviseren, som flere gange redder kaptajnens liv. Sammen overlever de to mænd snestorme, vilde dyr og banditter, men én ting kan Dersu ikke overleve ... Det smukke naturdrama vandt Oscar som bedste udenlandske film.
