Som en blanding mellem opfinderen Thomas Edison og ridderen Don Quijote besidder Burt Munro (Anthony Hopkins) både en veludviklet kreativitet og en ukuelig stædighed, når det kommer til motordrevne køretøjer. Igennem en menneskealder har han drømt om at sætte fartrekord på sin gamle Indian Scout motorcykel. Nu er han efterhånden kommet så langt op i årene, at hvis den gamle drøm skal få hjul at køre på, er det ved at være sidste udkald. Året er 1967, da Munro begiver sig ud på sit livs rejse mod de saltede, flade sletter i Bonneville, Utah, hvor fart-entusiaster én gang hvert år tester klodens hurtigste køretøjer. Men for Munro, der er bosat i New Zealand, er Utah på den anden side af Jorden, og turen dertil bliver en ikke helt ukompliceret affære.
