I tre dage i 1986 passerede Jorden halen på en mystisk komet. Det betyder, at alle maskiner pludselig får liv og begynder at gå til angreb på deres skabere. Plæneklippere klipper ejeren i stedet for plænen, motorsave vender bladet mod brugeren, i radioen har maskinerne overtaget udsendelserne og på vejen forsøger biler og lastbiler at påkøre deres chauffører! Alle maskiner er gået i MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE!
På et truckstop sætter en lille gruppe mennesker sig for at stoppe maskinerne, før maskinerne stopper dem.
