En dybdegående, følelsesladet og spændingsfyldt skildring af livet bag tremmer i det britiske fængsel, hvor Mark Cobden (Sean Bean) druknes i skyld efter han ved et uheld tog livet af en uskyldig mand. Da han får accepteret den fire års lange dom og det at være adskilt fra sin familie, møder han Eric McNally (Stephen Graham) – en omsorgsfuld fængselsbetjent, der gør sit bedste for at beskytte dem i hans varetægt. Men da en af de farligste indsatte identificerer hans svagheder, står Eric ansigt til ansigt med et umuligt valg mellem hans principper og hans familie. En fortælling om skyld og tilgivelse, straf og afsoning, hvor både Mark og Eric er fanget i deres fortid og usikre på deres fremtid. Har de styrke til at fortsætte?
