Salems Lot kunne være hvilken som helst lille by i New England. Indtil en fremmed en dag ankommer til byen. Dette udløser en snigende ondskab så ødelæggende, at det truer hele byens eksistens. Ben Mears, en ung forfatter, vender hjem til Salems Lot for at skrive en bog om det gamle Marsten House, en bygning der totalt dominerer byen.
