I 2011 har menneskene skabt et alternativ til fossilt brændstof ved at avle nogle ekstremt farlige planter, Triffider, som de nu er afhængige af til energi og brændstof. Da den menneskelige race trues af en dødbringende meteorregn, får det også konsekvenser for Triffiderne - de muterer og vender sig mod menneskene for at overtage verden. En udvalgt elite tager kampen op for at redde dem selv fra det, der kunne være menneskehedens sidste dage.
