Dette er fortællingen om Gus og Woodrow, to forhenværende Texas Rangers, der i lang tid har delt både medgang og modgang. Gus (Robert Duvall) er den romantiske med et godt øje til smukke damer, Woodrow (Tommy Lee Jones) er ikke i besiddelse af den samme følsomhed, men har derimod en stor drøm - at skabe sig et nyt liv i nordvest. Ansporet af Woodrows planer rejser en gruppe af sted fra sydstaterne med en flok kreaturer mod Montanas frugtbare marker. Foran sig har de 3000 mil med vanskeligt terræn, sandstorme, snestorme og skrupelløse banditter.
