Dr. Alan Farragut og hans udrykningshold fra CDC (Centers for Disease Control) bliver tilkaldt, da en privat forskningsfacilitet bliver ramt af et virusudbrud. Farragut indvilliger øjeblikkeligt, hans bror er nemlig en af de inficerede! Sammen med sit team ankommer Farragut til Nordpolen, til en gigantisk base under jorden, hvor der foregår mange mere eller mindre skumle eksperimenter. Specielt forskningslederen Dr. Hiroshi Hatake virker som om han ikke har rent mel i posen. Virusen har allerede krævet to dødsofre, men da Farragut åbner ligposerne, for at undersøge de døde kollegaer, vælter der bare tykt sort væske ud!
