Caprica, som foregår 58 år før Battlestar Galactica, følger to rivaliserende familier - Graystones og Adamas - mens de vokser, konkurrerer og trives i den livlige verden af de fredelige 12 kolonier, der lever i et samfund tæt på vores eget. Indviklet i den spirende teknologi af kunstig intelligens og robotteknologi, der i sidste ende vil føre til skabelsen af Cylons, går de to huse tå-til-tå, og blander handling med virksomhedskonspiration og seksuel politik.
