Manji er en grov, voldelig samurai med en særlig evne: han kan ikke dø. Forbandet med udødelighed af nonnen Yobikuni som straf for sine hensynsløse gerninger, er han blevet træt af sit tidløse liv. Den eneste måde at ophæve forbandelsen på er at dræbe 1.000 onde mænd. Så Manji vandrer rundt i Japan og udgyder de ondes blod på sin mission efter endelig at dø.
