Der schüchterne Mario (Massimo Troisi), eigentlich Fischer auf der kleinen sizilianischen Insel Salinas, betätigt sich in den 50er Jahren als privater Briefträger des hier im Exil lebenden legendären Poeten Pablo Neruda (Philippe Noiret).
