Im gesetzlosen Ödland um das Dorf Ramgarh treibt der gefürchtete Bandit Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan) sein Unwesen. Polizist Thakur (Sanjeev Kumar) fasst den Schurken, der jedoch kurz darauf wieder entkommt. Kaltblütig und brutal rächt sich Gabbar an Thakur und seiner Familie. Der Polizist heuert die Kleinganoven Veeru (Dharmendra) und Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) an. Sie sollen das Dorf vor Gabbars Überfällen und Plünderungen beschützen und seine Bluttaten vergelten. Die beiden Revolverhelden versuchen bald alles, um dem belagerten Dorf zu helfen und die „sholay“ (Glut) der Rache, die in Thakur brennt, zu besänftigen.
