Als der Krieg ausbricht, lebt Annika mit ihren Eltern in Värmland, nahe der Grenze zu Norwegen. Ihr Cousin Harald ist Schwarzhändler, muss aber vor der Polizei nach Norwegen fliehen. Annika zieht nach Stockholm und bekommt einen Job als Kellnerin. Sie lernt die unbeschwerte Berit kennen und zusammen verbringen sie eine wundervolle Zeit. Sie trifft auch einen jungen Mann, Bengt, den sie heiratet. Doch nach der Hochzeit enthüllt ihr Gatte sein wahres Gesicht.
