Der Film besteht aus drei unabhängigen Teilen: "Workmate", "Déjà vu" und "Operation Y". Die Handlung folgt den Abenteuern von Shurik (alternative Schreibweise — Shourick), dem naiven und nerdigen sowjetischen Studenten, der oft in absurde Situationen gerät, aber immer einen sehr sauberen Ausweg findet. "Operation Y und Shuriks andere Abenteuer" war ein erfolgreicher Film und wurde 1965 der führende sowjetische Filmvertrieb.
