In Willkommen im Süden dreht sich alles um den Süden Italiens. “Ich hab gesagt, ich sei behindert.” Mit diesem Satz eröffnet der Postbeamte Alberto Colombo seiner Frau, dass seine Lüge die Versetzung nach Mailand zunichte machte. Denn der Schwindel fliegt auf, und anstatt gekündigt zu werden, wird Alberto in den Süden Italiens strafversetzt. Für den Norditaliener und seine Familie bedeutet Süditalien der blanke Horror: Mafiosi und andere Gauner, Dreck auf den Straßen und ein Dialekt, den niemand so wirklich versteht.
