Mary Marino leidet seit einiger Zeit unter Schizophrenie. Zwar ist ihr Zustand zuletzt wieder besser geworden, doch nach und nach häufen sich wieder ihre Anfälle. Darunter leiden neben ihr vor allem ihr Ehemann John und der gemeinsame Sohn Chris. Als sie eines Abends Chris während eines Anfalls unbeabsichtigt verletzt, wird sie in ein Krankenhaus eingeliefert. Vater und Sohn kommen zunächst mit der Situation nur schwierig zurecht und entfernen sich im Alltag immer mehr voneinander. Doch bald merkt John, dass er für Chris alles ist, was er noch hat.
