Die elfjährige Margaret wird aus ihrem Leben in New York City in die Vorstadt von New Jersey vertrieben, wo sie die chaotischen und turbulenten Zeiten der Pubertät mit neuen Freunden in einer neuen Schule durchlebt. Sie verlässt sich auf ihre Mutter Barbara, die ebenfalls damit zu kämpfen hat, sich an das Leben außerhalb der Großstadt anzupassen, und auf ihre Großmutter Sylvia, die nicht glücklich darüber ist, dass sie weggezogen sind und sie bei jeder Gelegenheit daran erinnert. Basiert auf Judy Blumes Romanklassiker „Bist du da, Gott? Ich bin's, Margaret“ von 1970.
