Der Film ist ein Liebesbrief der jungen Mutter Waad al-Kateab an ihre Tochter Sama. Über einen Zeitraum von fünf Jahren erzählt sie von ihrem Leben im aufständischen Aleppo, wo sie sich verliebt, heiratet und ihr Kind zur Welt bringt, während um sie herum der verheerende Bürgerkrieg immer größere Zerstörung anrichtet. Ihre Kamera zeigt auf berührende und unmittelbare Weise Verlust, Überleben und Lebensfreude inmitten des Leids. Waad muss sich entscheiden, ob sie fliehen und ihre Tochter in Sicherheit bringen oder bleiben und den Kampf für die Freiheit weiterführen soll, für den sie schon so viel geopfert hat.
