Der Chef nervt genauso wie der Freund, der fremdgeht: Darby Spencer (Stacey Farber) zieht die Reißleine, kündigt ihren Polizei-Job samt Beziehung und wagt einen Neuanfang - ausgerechnet in ihrem Heimatort bei ihrer Mutter, einer gefeierten Krimi-Autorin (Lea Thompson). Ein Auftrag und ein dicker Batzen Geld motiviert die beiden, zusammen zu arbeiten. Mutter und Tochter gründen eine Privatdetektei, die "Spencer Sisters". Klingt einfacher, als es ist. Darby sprüht vor Temperament und Tatendrang und bringt Erfahrung in klassischer Ermittlungsarbeit mit. Ihre Mutter Victoria hingegen denkt mehr in literarischen Verbrecherjagd-Kategorien. Entsprechend unterschiedlich gehen die beiden an die Fälle heran. Auch ihre komplizierte gemeinsame Vergangenheit steht den Detektivinnen öfter im Weg.
