Im Mittelpunkt von „Black Books“ steht der schlecht gelaunte und äußerst exzentrische Buchhändler Bernard Black. Bernards Hingabe an die beiden Freuden Trunkenheit und vorsätzlicher Feindseligkeit vertieft und bereichert sowohl sein Leben als auch das von Manny, seinem Assistenten. Der bärtige, süße und gute Manny ist alles, was Bernard nicht ist, und wird von Bernard schonungslos bestraft, nur für das Verbrechen der Existenz. Sie sind in ihrer Bedeutung aufeinander angewiesen, so wie Fran, ihre älteste Freundin, auf ihre Ablenkung angewiesen ist.
Black Books ist eine Oase der Bücher, des Weins und der Unterhaltung. Die einzige Bedrohung für den Frieden und den Wohlstand der Gruppe ist ihre eigene grenzenlose Dummheit.
