Ο νεαρός Αμερικανός τουρίστας και μαθητής κολεγίου Μπίλι Χέις συλλαμβάνεται στην Κωνσταντινούπολη για κατοχή μικρής ποσότητας χασίς. Ο Μπίλι καταδικάζεται σε φυλάκιση τεσσάρων χρόνων. Μέσα στη φυλακή γνωρίζει τη βαναυσότητα του διοικητή, που τον χτυπά, τον βιάζει και τον μεταβάλει σε σωματικό και ψυχολογικό ράκος.
