Ο Σοκολά ήταν ο πρώτος διάσημος μαύρος καλλιτέχνης στη Γαλλία και η σύμπραξή του με τον κλόουν Φουτίτ τούς έκανε ένα ακαταμάχητο δίδυμο που άφησε εποχή, μεταμορφώνοντάς τους σε σταρ και δημοφιλείς θαμώνες στους καλλιτεχνικούς κύκλους της Μπελ Επόκ. Όμως, ο πειρασμός του εύκολου χρήματος, ο τζόγος και ο ρατσισμός της εποχής πληγώνουν βαριά την φιλία των δύο περφόρμερ και τελικά την καριέρα του Σοκολά. Αποκαθιστώντας δύο αδίκως ξεχασμένους πρωτοπόρους της τέχνης στη θέση που τους αξίζει στη συλλογική μνήμη, η ταινία αφηγείται την απίστευτη αληθινή ιστορία του μαύρου καλλιτέχνη που έκανε όλο το Παρίσι να υποκλιθεί μπροστά του.
