Ένα απόγευμα, σε ένα παριζιάνικο αστυνομικό τμήμα, ο Λουίς Φυγκέν εξετάζεται από τον μπερδεμένο επιθεωρητή Μπυρόν που θέλει να καταλάβει γιατί αυτός ο μάρτυρας, ο οποίος ανακάλυψε το γεμάτο αίματα σώμα ενός γείτονα μπροστά από το σπίτι του δύο ημέρες νωρίτερα, έκανε αρκετές διαδρομές μπρός και πίσω στο διαμέρισμά του και το εξωτερικό της πολυκατοικίας κατά τη διάρκεια της νύχτας του δράματος. Ανικανοποίητος από τις απαντήσεις του Φυγκέν, ο Μπυρόν παρατείνει την ανάκριση, η οποία παίρνει τελικά μια εκπληκτική στροφή.
