Όπως πολλά πράγματα, ξεκίνησε σαν ένα παιχνίδι στο όνομα της επιστήμης. Είκοσι άντρες. Δύο εβδομάδες. Με αντάλλαγμα δύο χιλιάδες δολάρια. Σκοπός, η μελέτη της ανθρώπινης συμπεριφοράς στο περιβάλλον μιας φυλακής. Οκτώ άντρες γίνονται οι "φύλακες" και οι υπόλοιποι δώδεκα παίρνουν τη θέση των κρατουμένων, μέσα σε πραγματικά κελιά. Οι τελευταίοι πρέπει να πειθαρχήσουν σε μια σειρά κανόνων και οι πρώτοι να επιβάλλουν την τάξη, όπως ακριβώς θα έπρεπε αν ήταν πραγματικοί φυλακισμένοι. Σιγά σιγά, η διαχωριστική γραμμή ανάμεσα στο"πείραμα" και την πραγματικότητα σβήνει και τα πράγματα ξεφεύγουν από τον έλεγχο.
