Η Dora είναι πρώην δασκάλα που ζει γράφοντας γράµµατα για αγράµµατους περαστικούς από τον κεντρικό σιδηροδροµικό σταθµό του Ρίο ντε Ζανέιρο. Ανάµεσα στους πελάτες της συγκαταλέγονται η Ana και ο εννιάχρονος γιος της. Όταν η Ana σκοτώνεται, η Dora δεσµεύεται να οδηγήσει τον εννιάχρονο ορφανό στον πατέρα του στην απόµακρη βορειανατολική Βραζιλία. Καθώς λεωφορεία και φορτηγά τους µεταφέρουν µέσα από το αφιλόξενο τοπίο, η Ana και το αγόρι κάνουν ένα νοερό ταξίδι φιλίας αλλά και αυτογνωσίας. Το ταξίδι µετατρέπεται σε µια αναζήτηση της ταυτότητάς τους.
