Σικάγο, αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1930, εποχή του μεγάλου οικονομικού κραχ. Ο Τόνι Καμόντε, γνωστός ως «Σημαδεμένος», είναι ένας νεαρός γκάνγκστερ ιταλικής καταγωγής, που ζει μαζί με τη μητέρα και την αδελφή του την οποία καταπιέζει λόγω υπερπροστατευτικότητας. Γίνεται το πρωτοπαλίκαρο του Τζόνι Λόβο και τον βοηθά να ελέγξει τη διακίνηση μπύρας στο νότιο τμήμα της πόλης. Αυτό δεν αρκεί στον ατρόμητο Τόνι. Ενάντια στις διαταγές του Λόβο και λόγω υπέρμετρης φιλοδοξίας, θέλει να επεκταθεί και στο βόρειο τμήμα το οποίο ελέγχουν οι Ιρλανδοί. Ανάμεσα στους δύο άντρες δημιουργείται μια ρήξη, που επιδεινώνεται όταν ο Τόνι ερωτεύεται την καλλονή ερωμένη του αφεντικού του, Πόπι.
