Έτος 198 της Ηλιακής Εποχής στο Τόκιο, ειδικές πυροσβεστικές δυνάμεις μάχονται ενάντια σε ένα φαινόμενο που ονομάζεται αυθόρμητη ανθρώπινη καύση, όπου τα ανθρώπινα όντα μετατρέπονται σε ζωντανές κολάσεις που ονομάζονται «Κολασμένοι». Ενώ οι Infernals είναι περιπτώσεις πρώτης γενιάς αυθόρμητης ανθρώπινης καύσης, οι μεταγενέστερες γενιές έχουν την ικανότητα να χειρίζονται τις φλόγες διατηρώντας παράλληλα την ανθρώπινη μορφή. Ο Shinra Kusakabe, ένας νεαρός που απέκτησε το παρατσούκλι Devil's Footprints για την ικανότητά του να ανάβει τα πόδια του κατά βούληση, εντάσσεται στην Special Fire Force Company 8 που αποτελείται από άλλους χρήστες φλογών καθώς εργάζονται για να σβήσουν τυχόν Infernals που συναντούν. Καθώς εμφανίζεται μια φατρία που δημιουργεί τους Infernals, ο Shira αρχίζει να αποκαλύπτει την αλήθεια πίσω από μια μυστηριώδη πυρκαγιά που προκάλεσε το θάνατο της οικογένειάς του πριν από δώδεκα χρόνια.
