Nita es una bonita joven que vive con su familia, refugiados del este de Pakistán, en los suburbios de Calcuta. Shankar, su hermano mayor, aspira ser cantante. Nita aplaza su matrimonio con el científico Sanat para ayudar a su familia, que necesita dinero para pagar los estudios de los hermanos más jóvenes. Cuando su padre y su hermano menor sufren un accidente, ella se convierte en el único sostén de la familia, pero la enfermedad que padece no deja de empeorar.
