نخستین فیلم کسدان در میان نخستین های سینمای معاصر جایگاه برجسته ای دارد. حرارت تن به روز کردن خود آگاهانه ی داستان یک فیلم نوآر نمونه ای (مشخصا از نوع غرامت مضاعف بیلی وایلدر، 1944) را مد نظر دارد و دراین راه تمام عناصر این نوع فیلم را با قوت تمام باز می آفریند. ـ داستان: «ند راسین» (هرت)، وکیل فلوریدایی درگیر رابطه ی پرشوری با «متی واکر» (ترنر)، همسر تاجر ثروتمند و مشکوکی به نام «ادموند و اکر» (کرنا) می شود و آن دو به اتفاق نقشه ی قتل او رامی کشند....
