ژاپن، سال ۱۶۳۰، پس از پایان جنگهای داخلی بسیاری از ساموراییها بیکار شدهاند. سامورایی جوانی (ایواشیتا) به امید لطف، سراغ طایفهی آیی میرود و وانمود میکند که قصد هاراکیری دارد. اما، برخلاف انتظار، او را مجبور به این اقدام میکنند. پس از آن پدرخواندهی سامورایی (ناکادایی) که دخترش را نیز به همسری او در آورده، برای انتقام وارد عمل میشود.
