«کنجی واتانابه» (شیمورا)، کارمند قدیمی بخش بایگانی شهرداری، در مییابد که به سرطان معده مبتلا شده و بیش از شش ماه دیگر زنده نمیماند. او ابتدا میخواهد تا از آخرین روزهای زندگیاش لذت ببرد، اما این بی فایده است و «واتانابه» میمیرد. در مراسم یادبودش، روشن میشود که پیش از مرگ یک زمین بازی برای بچههای محله ساخته است.
