همه چیز از باران و توفان آغاز میشود. پدری برای پسرش داستانی اسطوره ای را نقل میکند؛ داستانی به غایت غریب که اما خیلی زود باورش میکنیم. در چند بخش زندگی شخصیت اصلی را شاهدیم در اوایل قرن بیستم با یک کودک و مادربزرگ وحشیاش که در روستایی به نام تومباد (Tumbbad) در زنجیر نگهداری میشود روبرو هستیم، اما این مادربزرگ راز گنج و محل آن را میداند. این پسر به هنگام ترک آنجا با مادرش به او قول میدهد که هیچ گاه به تومباد بازنگردد، اما در اپیزود بعد او بازگشته و راز گنج را از مادربزرگش میپرسد و این آغاز ماجرای پر پیج و خمی است که این مرد را به هزارتوی وحشتناکی میکشاند؛ هزار توی حرص و آز. این فیلم که ماجراهای آن در روستایی به نام تومباد اتفاق میافتد، داستان سه نسل از یک خاندان هندی را روایت میکند که پس از احداث معبدی برای پرستش فرزند اول یکی از خدایان اسطورهای خود، با پیامدهایی ناگوار مواجه میشوند و…
