داستان مایکل برگ، وکیل آلمانی که در اواخر دهه ۱۹۵۰ در نوجوانی با زنی مسن تر به نام هانا رابطه داشت، زنی که سپس ناپدید شد و سال ها بعد دوباره به عنوان یکی از متهمان یک محاکمه جنایات جنگی که ناشی از اقداماتش به عنوان نگهبان اردوگاه کار اجباری در اواخر جنگ بود، ظاهر شد. تنها او است که می داند هانا بی سواد است و ممکن است این واقعیت را به قیمت آزادی اش پنهان کند.
