زیردریایی آمریکایی صحنه تنها فیلمی است که در آن رونالد ریگان و نانسی دیویس با هم بازی می کنند. بر اساس یک حادثه واقعی، فرمانده زیردریایی کیسی ابوت (ریگان) یک ماموریت پرخطر را برای نفوذ به تنگه مین پراکنده تسوشیما برای قطع ارتباط حیاتی بین قاره آسیا و جزایر ژاپن هدایت می کند. ابوت آب های خطرناک را زیر پا می گذارد و پایگاه دشمن را در یکی از جزایر نابود می کند و هزاران کشتی دشمن را غرق می کند. در طول عملیات، ابوت به فرمانده دوم خود، ستوان لاندون (آرتور فرانز)، تفاوت اساسی بین تصمیم فرماندهی و واکنش احساسی را آموزش می دهد.
لاندون زمانی مورد آزمایش قرار می گیرد که باید دستور یک مانور اضطراری را بدهد که ابوت را در وسط دریای آزاد گم کرده و تنها بگذارد.
ابوت نیز به نوبه خود ظرفیت عاطفی خود را زمانی که پس از نجات تحت مراقبت پرستار بلر (نانسی دیویس) قرار می گیرد، آزمایش می کند..../.
