داستان فیلم در دوران جنگ جهانی دوم، زمانی که ژاپن نیز وارد جنگ شده است رخ می دهد. آنها در برمه از اسرای جنگی متفقین بیگاری می کشند. در این اردوگاه که گریز از آنجا تقریبا نا ممکن است، اسرا وضعیت زندگی مطلوبی ندارند. از طرفی دیگر ژاپنی ها از آنها می خواهند بر روی رودخانه کوایی یک پل برای خط راه آهن احداث کنند اما در این کار موفق نیستند. ژاپنی ها با کلنل نیکلسون مذاکره می کنند که شاید او بتواند اسرا را برای کار بیشتر و موثر تر تشویق کند اما او شرایط خاصی را برای کار در نظر دارد که ژاپنی ها مخالفند. در این میان یک افسر آمریکایی بنام شیرز موفق به فرار می شود...
