«برگمن» (ال پاچینو) به همراه «مایک والاس» تهیه کننده یک برنامه خبری جنجال برانگیز در کانال CBS به نام «شصت دقیقه» هستند. او همواره به دنبال سوژه ها داغ و دردسرساز می گردد که در این حین به یک پرونده مشکوک در مورد کمپانیهای تولید سیگار برمیخورد. “برگمن” برای به دست آوردن اطلاعات دقیق به سراغ یکی از کارمندان ارشد کمپانی مذکور به نام «جفری وایگند» (راسل کرو) که اخیرا اخراج شده است می رود، پس از اصرار فراوان برگمن و دادن تضمینهای لازم، از جمله عدم نمایش تصویر او در برنامه، جفری اطلاعات و اسرار بسیار تکان دهنده ای را در اختیار برگمن می گذارد و حتی در برنامه تلویزیونی وی حاضر و پرده از رازی تکان دهنده برمی دارد ولی کمپانی های عظیم دخانیات مانع از پخش این مصاحبه میشوند…
