در سال ۱۹۴۲، کاروانی متشکل از ۳۵ کشتی غیرنظامی، که تدارکات حیاتی را از ایسلند به اتحاد جماهیر شوروی حمل میکنند، در قطب شمال با چالشهای مرگباری روبرو میشوند. با وجود همراهی نیروی دریایی متفقین، اشتباهات اطلاعاتی فاجعهبار کاروان را در معرض حملات بیامان هوایی و دریایی آلمان قرار می دهد. در چنین شرایط وحشیانهای، ملوانان غیرنظامی بیتجربه برای بقا میجنگند و تنها ۱۲ کشتی به مقصد میرسند.
