ماموریت چهار ماهه ناو Nathan James در جنوبگان به اتمام رسیده. ناخدا تام چندلر و سایر خدمه در صدد بازگشت به کشور هستند که کشتی آنها هنگام سوار کردن راشل اسکات محقق میکروب شناسی که در قطب جنوب در حال انجام آزمایشاتی سری است مورد حمله نیروهای خارجی قرار گرفته و آسیب میبیند. اما این تنها آغار ماجراست چرا که به زودی سخنگوی کاخ سفید که حالا کفیل موقت ریاست جمهوری است با او تماس گرفته و خبر از مرگ رییس جمهور و گسترش ویروسی ناشناخته در سرتاسر جهان میدهد که باعث مرگ هشتاد درصد جمعیت کره زمین شده و دنیا را در هرج و مرج عظیمی فرو برده و ظاهرا راشل اسکات که نخستین بار ویروس را در قاهره رصد کرده و تا جنوبگان به دنبال آن آمده تنها امید برای یافتن واکسنی برای بیماریست. و این آغاز آخرین ماموریت ناو Nathan James است: زنده ماندن و تلاش برای نجات نسل انسان از خطر انقراض در دنیایی آخرالزمانی.
