داستان درباره دختر جوانی به نام گریس مارکس است. مهاجری ایرلندی از خانوادهای فقیر با ریشههای عمیق مذهبی که خدمتکار خانوادهای ثروتمند در کانادا میشود. گریس به قتل ارباب خود و خانه دار او در سال 1843 متهم و محکوم شده است. جیمز مک درموت نیز به جرم همدستی دراین جنایت محکوم شده است. مک درموت به جرم قتل به دار آویخته میشود ، اما گریس به حبس ابد محکوم میشود و همین امر وی را به یکی از بدنام ترین زنان آن زمان در کانادا تبدیل میکند. حالا دکتر سیمون جردن قرار است در یک رشته مصاحبههای پیوسته با گریس حقایق داستان را روشن کند تا در صورت امکان عفو گریس را از دادگاه بگیرد.
