Vuonna 1944 kommandoryhmä saa tehtävän vapauttaa Amerikkalainen kenraali, jonka kone on pudonnut Saksan miehittämälle alueelle. Luotettu upseeri johtaa seitsenhenkistä iskuryhmää, jonka kyvykkäin jäsen on amerikkalainen luutnatti Schaffer. Hankalan hommasta tekee se, että kenraalia pidetään vuoren huipulle rakennetussa linnoituksessa, jonne pääsee vain yhdestä suunnasta kulkevan köysiradan avulla. Vuori sijaitsee vielä saksalaisten miehittämän kylän liepeillä, joten vihollisia ja hankalaa maastoa on luvassa riittämiin. Erityisen rasittavan tehtävästä tekee se, että iskuryhmän joukkoon on soluttautunut vieraan vallan agentti, joka yrittää sabotoida eteneviä pelastusyrityksiä parhaansa mukaan.
